Dela Peña, Pangga secure twin silver boxing medal

Two of the Philippines’ young boxing bets Kenneth dela Peña and Vincent Pangga gave their best shots to bag silver medals in the ASBC Asian Juniors Boxing Championships semifinals at Puerto Princesa City Coliseum on Sunday.

Dela Peña brandished his agility to beat Chinese Taipei’s Yu Chen-Ching in their pinweight tussle (44-46kg).

The 16-year-old rising boxer from General Santos City paraded a significant progress through his heavy punches which left Ching buffering in counterattacks in third and last round.

Cagayan de Oro City’s Pangga, 15, withstood Kazakhstan’s Talgat Syrymbetov’s aggression in the final round of the flyweight category to stamp a 3-2 victory.

Syrymbetov was forced to receive Pangga’s left-right combos in the first round to tally an eight-count. But the Kazakh fought back combative which dragged the Filipino to pull back in Round Three.

Ricky Vargas, president of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines, expressed his astonishment and warm welcome to the two amateurs.

“These boys are talented and determined to make the country proud,” said Vargas.

The four-time Batang Pinoy and 2016 Palarong Pambansa champ will face the defeatless Thailand’s Sarawut Sukthet over Kyrgyzstan’s Murtarbek Ibraimov.

Dela Peña will try to rout another Kazakh boxer Akilbek Mukhtarov on Monday finals.
