Gilas’ winning streak breaks to South Korea

Gilas’ misfired shots led them to fall short to the South Korean team permitting an 83-72 loss in the 39th William Jones Cup, July 19, Wednesday at Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall.


The Philippine team was only down with 73-69 despite looking for the rhythm behind the arc with two minutes left in the clock.


Gilas missed its five time shoots; the squad only made one trey made by Jio Jalalon out of its 26 attempts in the stretch.


With the loss, Gilas marked a 3-2 behind the sitting Canada, Lithuania and now South Korea who all logged a 4-1 record.


Three men from the Filipino team scored a double-digit. Mike Myers finished 18 points and 17 rebounds, with Jio Jalalon tallying 18 points and three boards. Christian Standhardinger launched 16 markers and five boards.


However, South Korea also obtained double-digit points but four from its players.


The blue jerseys blew as much as 16 points dominating the third quarter, 65-49 in that period.


Gilas then threatened for a fightback as they tried to make steals in the fourth frame.


Outside shooting would not make their baskets; instead the Filipino team drove inside the rim for points


With import Myers’ effort to lift Gilas, he managed to cut the lead to a four-point deficit in the last quarter.


Unfortunately, Koreans pulled away and scored six points to secure the victory.


Gilas Pilipinas will have another gamble to push against Iraq on Thursday, July 20 at 5 p.m.
