Wright secures Gilas’ quarterfinals spot

Gilas Pilipinas finished Group B sweep as they silenced winless Qatar squad, 80-74, in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup before the vast Filipino fans in Beirut, Lebanon, August 12.


Philippine team’s marksman Matthew Wright combusted and ran the show with back-to-back triples producing 25 points on 7-out-of-12 long range shooting.


Despite big guys Christian Standhardinger minus June Mar Fajardo missing in action, Gilas did the business and even challenged Qataris to a 20-point lead in the third quarter.


The Qatar team fought back and ripped the deficit to five points with two minutes remaining in the clock, but Wright answered a trey right away to stamp a victorious 3-0.


Carl Bryan Cruz propelled a gameplay of three treys and submitted 13 points. Terrence Romeo scored 10 points, with Gabe Norwood producing the same output plus seven rebounds and five assists.


Mansour Elhadary put the effort of 23 points and six assists, with Mohamed Saad capping 18 points and 11 rebounds.


Gilas Pilipinas will see the winner of Japan vs. Korea knockout game in the quarterfinals on Monday.
